How to Create an App Password for Google SMTP
Starting in autumn of 2024, Google will begin deprecation of basic authentication in the Google SMTP server which is currently used by both RapidIdentity Cloud and LTS.
In preparation for this change, RapidIdentity customers using Google for their SMTP server must add a Google App Password, a 16-digit passcode that gives a less secure application or device permission to access the Google Account, to the Google Account currently used for SMTP Basic Authentication. App Passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on.
Note:
These instructions only apply to RapidIdentity customers that use Google as their SMTP server.
RapidIdentity Cloud Customers that use the default SMTP server do not need to make any changes.
Create a Google App Password
* Log into the Google account which is used to send emails for the tenant
* Select Security
* Under "How you sign in to Google," select 2-Step Verification
* At the bottom of the page, select App passwords
* Enter a name that helps you remember where you’ll use the app password and click the Create
button
Note:
The 16-character code that is generated will be used as the app password which is subsequently used in the RapidIdentity SMTP configuration and Connect Send Email Actions to send email
* Copy the 16-character code and select Done
to close the SMTP Settings
Configure a Google App Password for a Google SMTP Server in RapidIdentity Portal
* Navigate to Configuration > Systems > SMTP
Note:
If you are a RapidIdentity Cloud Customer and the
USE DEFAULT CONFIGURATION
check box is checked, you are not using Google for SMTP and do not need to make any changes to your current configuration
* Click the Update Password
button and enter the 16-character App Password followed by Save
Configure a Google App Password for a Google SMTP Server in RapidIdentity Connect
* Navigate to Connect > Action Sets
* Enter sendEmail
in the Search Area and press Enter
* Check the Search all projects
and Match Actions
check boxes
* Evaluate each Action Set and update all sendEmail
Actions by replacing the current password with the 16-character App Password and Save
Note:
The sendEmailWithDefaults in RapidIdentity Cloud does not use Google SMTP for email, no action is necessary for Action Sets using the sendEmailWithDefaults in RapidIdentity Cloud
